2012 MCME

The application of mathematical modelling and computation techniques in the field of musculoskeletal engineering holds great potential to deliver novel solutions to previously intractable scientific problems and to open up lines of scientific enquiry and new strategies for treating musculoskeletal disorders and disease.

The inaugural Conference and Workshop on Modelling and Computation in Musculoskeletal Engineering (MCME) will be held in the Institute for Health and Biomedical Innovation, at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) over four days from 12 – 15 November 2012 and will showcase significant examples of the impact of modelling and computation in biomedical engineering whilst providing an opportunity for participants to take part in the collaborative solution of real world problems. The event will consist of two components: a two day conference followed by a two day collaborative, problem-focused workshop.

INVITED SPEAKERS

WORKSHOP

The workshop component will be moderated by resident experts (Dr Devakar Epari, IHBI, Dr Roland Steck, IHBI, Dr Mia Woodruff, IHBI, Dr Travis Klein, IHBI and Dr Tim Wehner, Uni of Ulm) and will provide attendees with the opportunity to collaborate on the construction and analysis of mathematical and computational models, seeking innovative solutions to real-world  challenges in musculoskeletal engineering research.  The workshop sessions are modelled on the highly successful Mathematics in Industry Study Group which provides a forum for mathematicians to work collaboratively and intensively on scientific problems provided by experts from industry, clinical practice or other scientific disciplines. It is expected that these workshops will open up novel lines of research on complex problems and create new opportunities for multidisciplinary research collaboration in the future.

For this inaugural meeting, the workshop activity will be focused around challenges in bone regeneration, with a particular emphasis on mechano-biology, angiogenesis, growth factor delivery and cartilage zonation.
